INFORMATION MANAGEMENT AND THE PERFORMANCE OF NIGERIAN BREWERIES PLC ENUGU (A CASE STUDY OF AMA BREWERIES 9TH MILE CORNER ENUGU)

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

            Information management (IM) concerns a cycle of organizational activity: the acquisition of information from one more sources, the custodianship and the distribution of that information to those who need it, and its ultimate disposition through archiving or deletion. This cycle of organizational involvement with information involves a variety of stakeholders: for example those who are responsible for assuring the quality, accessibility and utility of acquired information, those who are responsible for its safe storage and disposal, and those who need it for decision making. Stakeholders might have rights to originate change, distribute or delete information according to organizational information management policies (Cross, Earl 2004).

In the words of Ward and Peppard (2002), information management embraces all the generic concepts of management, including: planning, organizing, structuring, processing, controlling, evaluation and reporting of information activities, all of which is needed in order to meet the needs of those with organizational roles or functions that depend on information. Information management is closely related to, and overlaps, the management of data, systems, technology, processes and, where the availability of information is critical to organizational success, strategy. This broad view of the realm of information management contrasts with the earlier, more traditional view, that the life cycle of managing information is an operational matter that requires procedures, organizational capabilities and standards that deal with information as a product or a service.

Information management has cursory relationship with organizational performance. Organizational performance comprises the actual output or results of an organization as measured against its intended outputs (or goals and objectives). According to Richard et al. (2009) organizational performance encompasses three specific areas of firm outcomes:

(a)        Financial performance (profits, return on assets, return on investment, etc);

(b)        Product market performance (sales, market share, etc.); and

(c)        Shareholder return (total shareholder return, economic value added, etc.).

The term organizational effectiveness is broader. Specialists in many fields are concerned with organizational performance including strategic planners, operations, finance, legal, and organizational development.

In Breweries Company, its performance could be measured in sales volume and sales promotion, advertising, publicity capacity, and total output this involves marketing communication mix, which consists of the sub sets of marketing tools that are primarily communicational in nature. They are tools normally classified under promotion which is one of the controllable variables of the 4ps of marketing promotional mix, is made up of advertising personal selling, sales promotional mix that is rapidly gaining additional recognition in most industries especially in the brewery industry in Nigeria is the sales promotion. It is not enough for manufacturing company mostly in developing countries like Nigeria, to merely produce and expect consumers to have aware of such products. The firm has to engage in publicity and promotional activities.

In recent years, many organizations have attempted to manage organizational performance using the balanced scorecard methodology were performance is tracked and measured in multiple dimension such as:

  • Financial performance (e.g. shareholder return)
  • Customer service
  • Social responsibility (e.g. corporate citizenship, community outreach)
  • Employee stewardship

Clearly, good information management is crucial to the smooth working of any organizations, and although there is no commonly accepted theory of information management per se, behavioural and organizational theories help. In modern organizations, there is information handling and decision making. One crucial factor in information handling and decision is and individuals’ ability to process information and to make decision under limitations that might derive from the context: a person’s age, the situational complexity, or a lack of requisite quality in the information that is at hand, all of which is exacerbated by the rapid advance of technology and the new kings of system that it enables, especially as the social web emerges as a phenomenon that business cannot ignore (Bytheway, 2015)… it is worthy to note that effective management of information set the pace for improved performance of the organization in terms of productivity, increase in total production and sales volume.
